Some of you may have noticed that we have a lot more participation due to climate change. This summer, many of our clients have had water problems caused by heavy rains. In asking for advice, we start with the simplest devices. The simplest solution is often the best. First solution is to start off with your landscaping. Make sure that the soil grades away from your house. Plant in the soil at least 24 inches away from your house. Make sure your down spouts exit into pipes leading away from the house. If you live in a house surrounded with trees, make sure to look into leaf guards for your gutters. I prefer leaf screens, over plastic frames because they allow more water to penetrate. If you are all about being green, another solution is getting rain barrels for your down spouts and running a hose through your garden. If your topography does not make this simple, then there are solar activated pumps that will pump water to your hoses and your desired destination. Finally, distribute the soaker hoses through your garden or plants and run the hose to them, keeping in mind that these areas are not close to your foundation and are in a positive draining area. These are simple but effective ways of controlling water caused by our over indulgence in fossil fuel. Next in our bi-weekly talks, stay tuned as we discuss other simple solutions to help the environment.
